Chapter Eight
Shay was gone when I woke. The chair in the corner of the room sat empty and undisturbed as if I had imagined his presence. I patted my hair, feeling the matted texture at the back and wincing as I slid out from between Rainn and Tor to find a comb before they woke.
I wanted to look presentable, even if they were the reason my hair was such a mess.
It took a moment to realize what had woken me from my dead sleep as the hustle and bustle of the nymph village grew more prominent as people filtered into the tents surrounding ours.
The night before, Rainn, Tor, and I had been the only guests, bedding down on the outskirts of camp, but it seemed that more fae had arrived for the impending wedding while we slept.
I stumbled over to my pack and dressed quickly, slipping the firelighter into my pocket for no reason other than it was a gift. I then pulled out my comb and several hairpins.
Rainn rolled over, his limp arm hanging off the bed as he grumbled in his sleep. I bit back a laugh. Rainn always slept deeply; it would take an earthquake to wake him before he was ready.
Tor, on the other hand, slept on his back. Completely still, as if ready to spring up at any moment.
As if sensing my eyes on him, Tor sat up, brushing his long dark hair out of his face. Alert, though he had just woken up, he searched for the source of the ruckus before relaxing when his eyes met mine.
âThe day before the wedding,â Tor grumbled, sliding his legs over the side of the bed to rest on the floor. He cocked his head to the side, staring at the pearl-encrusted comb and hair pins. âWould you like me to braid your hair?â
I reached up, rubbing one of the silver tendrils between my fingers. âWould you? I donât have a mirror, and the back is a state.â
Tor nodded, patting the bed. âSit in front of me.â
I bit back a smile but did as he said, perching on the end of the bed closest to the tent wall. Rainn lay under the covers, sleeping peacefully despite the low hum of excited chatter as the other tents began to fill.
Torâs callused fingers brushed the back of my neck as he moved my hair, reaching over my shoulder for the pearl comb. He quickly separated the snarls, combing from the bottom with gentle, practiced strokes. Though I knew my hair was tangled, it didnât hurt when Tor combed my hair.
âYouâre good at this,â I noted, amused.
âElsbeth wouldnât let anyone fix her hair as a youngling. She said I was the only one who did her hair how she liked.â Tor murmured, a smile in his voice. âIt annoyed our mother, but I learned how to braid hair quickly. Lest my younger sister look like a state around the castle.â
âIâm surprised your mother didnât just tell Elsbeth to let one of her maids do her hair,â I replied.
